End of April, at the end of the war, my husband somehow got to the Fernpass with the Kreisleiter. Before leaving he said to us: "The enemy is getting closer and closer. The French and the blacks and I dont know who else, are already coming in." And he also said we should go now, the collapse was near. "Now it won't be long". Then he said: "A truck is coming which is going to South Tyrol to get food and the truck is empty." He told us we could go to South Tyrol on the truck. We'd be safer in South Tyrol for the time being. Then we drove to South Tyrol. At the last moment we put in the cradle with the child and covered him with a feather quilt. My mother already had placed her bags inside. In fact, I wanted to stay in Imst but in the end I got in with the others and only had a small suitcase. We took had a small milk can with us. The only belongings we took were the cradle, a small milk can and two sets of cutlery. Naturally we left the silver cutlery and everything else that was valuable in Imst. In the meantime the war was over, at the beginning of May, people - locals and foreigners - broke into our flat and looted everything.
